More Grooming Tips Without Asking at the Door
Most groomers hate asking for tips. It feels pushy, and it puts the customer on the spot. The good news is that you do not have to ask. Tips mostly come from two things: a customer who feels their pet was well looked after, and a customer who has an easy way to say thanks. You can work on both without saying a word about money.
Tipping Is the Customer's Choice
If you share tips with a bather, the policy side was covered in Splitting Grooming Tips Between Groomer and Bather: An Office Practice, Not a Software Setting. This article is about the step before that: giving customers a reason and a way to tip.
A tip is a thank-you, not a fee. The ideas below are about making the groom feel personal and making the thank-you easy. None of them involve hinting, tip jars on the van door or awkward pauses at handoff.
Make Tipping Possible for the Customer Who Was Not Home
In mobile grooming, the biggest obstacle to tipping is simply that the customer was not there. They could not hand over cash, and they may not carry any anyway.
In PetGroomBossPro, customers can leave a tip on a paid invoice in the customer app: $10, $20, $30 or another amount. That gives every customer the chance to tip, whether they were home or not. The single most useful thing you can do is make sure customers know the option exists. One line in your welcome message is enough: “If you ever want to tip your groomer, you can do it on a paid invoice in the app.”
Leave a Note They Will Read
The grooming checklist in the groomer app has a note for the customer for each pet. Use it. A short, specific note shows that the groomer paid attention to this particular dog:
- “Biscuit was a champ for his nails today.”
- “Matting behind the ears is coming back, we will keep an eye on it.”
- “Olive was nervous with the dryer, so we went slow and finished with a towel.”
That kind of note is what makes a customer feel their pet was handled by someone who cares. The office can also print a Grooming Report from the checklist. A customer who reads a note like that is often happy to open the app and say thanks.
Timely Texts Keep the Customer in the Loop
Automatic “on the way” and “arrived” texts let the customer know the van is coming and then that it is there, and the live map in the customer app shows how many stops away the groomer is. And the invoice arrives by email and in the customer app soon after the groom is complete.
All of this keeps the customer involved in a visit they did not see. A customer who got the arrived text, a thoughtful note and a clear paid invoice within the same hour has a full picture of the visit — and the tip button is right there on that invoice.
Clear Invoices Help More Than You Think
A confusing bill puts customers in a questioning mood, not a generous one. An invoice with a line for each pet and each add-on, as covered in One Line per Pet: Building a Mobile Grooming Invoice the Customer Understands, leaves nothing to puzzle over. The customer sees what was done, sees that it was paid, and can move straight to whether they want to tip.
The same goes for charging at completion. A customer whose card was charged without fuss, for the amount they expected, has nothing to be irritated about.
Consistency Earns Tips Over Time
The customers who tip most reliably tend to be the ones who trust you. Repeat appointments every 4, 6 or 8 weeks, on the same weekday and time, with the same cut notes carried forward from the last visit, build that trust. The dog looks the same every time. The van shows up when it said it would. The customer never has to explain the cut again.
That consistency matters more than any trick. A small joke for the road: dogs never forget a good groomer, and their owners tend not to either.
Say Thank You Back
When a customer tips, a short thank-you text from the office through two-way texting goes a long way. It does not need to mention the amount. “Thank you so much for the tip — we love grooming Daisy!” is plenty.
Then let the tips report keep track of the rest, as described in The Grooming Tips Report: Every App Tip in One Place.
No asking, no pressure: just good grooms, good notes and an easy way to say thanks. To see app tipping alongside invoices, card on file and the customer app, visit the pet grooming invoicing software page.
