The Per-Pet Grooming Checklist in the Groomer App
A groomer working three pets at one home is juggling a lot. Which one had the ears done? Did the second dog get the nail grinding that was paid for? Was the sanitary trim done on the little one before the owner came out? A checklist for each pet answers those questions, for the groomer during the groom and for the office and the customer afterward.
One Checklist Per Pet
The card so far has shown the pets, their notes, the add-ons, the van notes and Past Notes in the Groomer App: How the Last Groom Went, Before This One Starts. Once the groomer taps Start, the checklist comes into play.
It is per pet, not per appointment. A home with two dogs and a cat has three checklists, one for each, so each pet's record is its own.
What Is on the Checklist
The standard items for each pet:
- Coat & skin checked on arrival
- Brushed out / de-matted
- Bath & conditioner
- Blow dry & fluff
- Haircut / style
- Sanitary trim
- Paw pads
- Nails
- Ears
- Eyes & face
- Final brush-out
Below those are the add-ons ticked on the appointment for that pet, such as teeth brushing or a bandana, so the extras are checked off in the same place as everything else.
Not every item applies to every pet or service. A bath and brush will not have a haircut; a nail trim appointment will have little more than nails. The groomer ticks what was done.
It Is a Record, Not a Recipe
The checklist does not tell anyone how to groom. Every groomer has their own order and their own methods, and the app does not try to change that. What the checklist does is record, for each pet, what was done on this visit.
That record is useful in three places: in the van, to make sure nothing was skipped on a busy multi-pet stop; in the office, to see what happened without calling the groomer; and with the customer, who can see it on the Grooming Report.
The Note for the Customer
Each pet's checklist has a note for the customer at the bottom. This is where the groomer writes what the owner should know: “Matting behind the ears is coming back.” “Nails were long this time, might want to come a little sooner.” “She did great with the dryer today.”
The customer note is separate from the pet's internal notes. It is written for the owner to read. More on that in the next article, The Note for the Customer: Telling Pet Owners What the Groomer Noticed Today.
What the Office Sees
When the groomer completes the appointment, the office sees each pet's checklist on the job, along with the customer note and the before-and-after photos. From there the office can print a Grooming Report for the customer.
If a customer calls a week later asking whether the ears were cleaned, the office can look at the checklist and answer. If there is a pattern (one groomer always skipping paw pads, say), the owner can see it and talk about it. The record belongs to the business, not to one person's memory. That office view is covered in What the Office Sees When the Groomer Completes an Appointment.
Checklists and New Groomers
For a new groomer, the checklist is a quiet safety net. They already know how to groom; what they do not know yet is this business's standard and these particular regulars. A checklist that shows the same items on every pet keeps everyone working to the same standard without the owner looking over their shoulder.
For the owner, it is a way to check a new groomer's first weeks without riding along every day. Training is covered later in the series.
The checklist also gives the owner a quiet way to keep standards across vans. If every groomer ticks the same items for every pet, the owner can look at any completed appointment and see the same shape of record, whether it was groomed in Van 1 on Monday or Van 3 on Friday. Differences stand out, and they become a conversation instead of a surprise from a customer.
Keeping It Fast
A checklist nobody uses is worse than none. The groomer app keeps it to taps. The groomer does not type anything except the customer note, and even that is optional. Most groomers tick items in batches at natural pauses, after the bath, after the haircut, at the final brush-out, rather than after every step.
The checklist ties the groom to the invoice and the Grooming Report. For the full picture of what the groomer app does, from the day in order to payment at completion, visit the PetGroomBossPro dog grooming app page.
