A New Pet at a Regular Home: Adding a Dog or Cat in the Groomer App
It happens all the time. The groomer arrives at a six-week regular and there is a second dog in the doorway, a new puppy, wiggling and very interested in the van. “Can you do him too?” Or the customer texts the office: “We adopted a cat, can she be added next time?” A regular home with a new pet is good news for the business. It just needs to land on the card correctly.
Adding a Pet to the Visit
The previous article, Updating a Pet's Notes So the Next Groom Starts Right, covered changing details for a pet that is already on file. A new pet is the same idea, one step earlier: add it to the visit, fill in its details, and from then on it carries forward like the others.
Each visit can hold up to four pets. A home that had one dog and now has two, or two dogs and a new cat, simply has one more pet on the card.
Filling In the New Pet's Details
The fields are the same as every other pet:
- Name, and Dog or Cat.
- Breed, as the owner describes it.
- Size: Toy, Small, Medium, Large or Giant.
- Coat: Short / Smooth, Medium, Long, Double Coat, Curly / Doodle, Wire or Hairless.
- Rabies due date, if the owner has it.
- Notes for the cut and behavior.
For a puppy, the first notes are often about getting used to grooming, such as “puppy intro, first groom, short session.” Those notes will change quickly over the first few visits, which is fine. Update them as the puppy settles in.
The First Groom Is When the Notes Get Written
A new pet's card starts thin. The first groom is when the useful details get written down: the cut the owner wants, how the pet handled the van, anything the next groomer should know. That first set of notes is worth extra care, because it will be read at every visit after.
The first before-and-after photos help too. A record of the starting coat and the first cut gives future groomers a reference. Photos are covered in Before-and-After Photos From the Groomer App.
Same-Day Requests at the Door
When the owner asks at the door to add the new pet today, the groomer has a decision to make. A quick nail trim might fit. A full groom on a second dog might push the rest of the day back by an hour. The schedule, with its set times, is right there on the phone to help decide.
If it fits, the groomer works the new pet into the visit and writes the pet's name, breed and what was done on the appointment, so the office can add the pet to the visit and the invoice is right. If it does not fit, the groomer says so and the office books the new pet for its own visit or the next regular one. Either way, the office should know, so the invoice and the schedule stay accurate.
Making Sure Price and Schedule Follow
A new pet usually means a new price. A second dog on a full groom is a second service; a cat groom is priced differently from a dog groom. The office makes sure the appointment and future visits reflect it. For repeat clients, the Recurring Clients list lets the office change the price for upcoming visits.
The schedule may need a look too. A home that took one hour now takes two. If the regular slot is at 10:30 with another appointment at 11:30, the office may need to move one of them. Better to fix that before the next visit than discover it at the door.
New Cats at a Dog Home
Adding a cat to a home that has always been dogs is common enough to mention. The cat gets its own entry marked Cat, with its own coat and notes. Some groomers prefer to schedule cats separately or in a particular order at the home. Whatever your approach, the card shows both, each clearly marked. Cats are covered in more detail in Cats on the Groomer App: Cat Grooms, Lion Cuts and Notes That Keep Visits Calm.
Growth From Your Own Regulars
New pets at existing homes are some of the easiest growth a mobile grooming business gets: no marketing, no new address, no extra drive. Making the add-on smooth (pet entered properly, price updated, schedule adjusted) turns a one-time “can you do him too?” into a permanent addition to the visit.
