The Solo Mobile Groomer: Grooming, Booking and Billing From One Van
A lot of mobile grooming businesses are one person and one van. That person grooms all day, answers texts between appointments, books new clients at red lights (please do not), and does the invoices at night. For a solo groomer, software is not about managing a team. It is about getting the evenings back.
The Other End of the Scale
The last guide, Running a Two-Van Mobile Pet Grooming Company: Groomers, Bathers and Shared Vans, was about growing. This one is about doing it all yourself, which is where most mobile groomers start and where many happily stay.
Booking Without Answering Every Text
For a solo groomer, the biggest time sink is often the back-and-forth with new customers. How much for two dogs? Do you do cats? When can you come? The Book Now page answers most of that. Customers pick the service, their pets, sizes, add-ons and a preferred time, and they see a price straight away. The request lands in Leads with an email to you.
You look at it when you have a minute, pick a slot that fits your route, and book it. No one is waiting on a reply to find out the price.
Regulars Who Book Themselves Into the Future
Most of a solo groomer's week is regulars. Add Recurring Grooming puts each one on a fixed slot, same weekday, time and van every 4, 6 or 8 weeks or whatever they choose, and writes every visit up front. You stop having the “when should we book next?” conversation at the door, because the next visit already exists.
The evening before each day, open Pending Jobs, look over tomorrow, and confirm with one click. It is a few minutes on the couch, and the night-before reminders go out on their own.
Your Day on Your Phone
The groomer app shows your day in order with the set times. Each card has navigation, the pets with breed, size, coat and cut notes, add-ons, van notes and past notes. You tap Start, work the checklist for each pet, take before-and-after photos and tap Complete. The on-the-way and arrived texts go out without you touching your phone. The groomer app is covered in detail in The Groomer App: A Mobile Pet Grooming Day on One Phone.
Paid Before You Leave
When you tap Complete, the invoice is created and the card on file can be charged right then. The owner gets a paid invoice in the customer app and can leave a tip. For a solo groomer that means the end of the day does not come with a pile of invoices to write and send. Most of the day's visits are already paid.
The few that are not, such as a declined card, get past-due follow-up so you are not chasing each one yourself.
Fewer Interruptions While You Groom
Every text you answer while a dog is on the table is a distraction. Automatic reminders and the customer app's live map take care of the most common question, “when will you be here?”, without you. Two-way texting keeps customer replies in one place so you can answer them together between appointments instead of one by one as they come in.
Notes You Do Not Have to Remember
Solo groomers often carry their whole client list in their head. That works until it does not: a client you see every eight weeks, a dog whose cut changed last spring, a gate code that was updated. With the pets, cut notes and van notes saved on the visit and carried forward, you do not have to remember. You just read the card.
It also means that if you ever do add help, even a bather one day a week, they can read the same cards.
The Right Plan for One Van
PetGroomBossPro's Start plan is $59 a month and includes 500 texts sent and received each month in the US and Canada. A solo groomer can start there and move up later if they need more. Pro is $89 and Crew is $199. Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial and no credit card. See Pet Grooming Software Pricing: What $59, $89 and $199 a Month Get a Mobile Groomer for more.
Getting the Evenings Back
The goal for a solo groomer is simple: spend the day grooming and the evening not doing paperwork. Bookings that price themselves, regulars who are already booked, a day that runs from the phone and invoices that pay themselves get most of the way there. For the rest of the guides, go back to the pet grooming software page.
